Can You Keep a Secret?

Last October, Today Show contributor, Jill Martin, joined Kathie Lee and Hoda to do a feature on return of Retro clothing styles (and toys!).

For any of us who survived the era of leg warmers and jelly shoes, this feature sent chills down our spines. Why bring them back? Wasn't once enough? Apparently, not!

For a couple of years now, vintage and retro clothing has sparked an interest from shoppers who are looking for timeless, one-of-a-kind pieces. On college campuses across the nation, young men and women are sporting styles of days-gone-by.

What's old is new again--- "thrifting" is by no means a new idea. People have been doing it for years, which prompted the openings of many, many used clothing shops across New York state,  but the demand for specific retro and vintage styles is fairly new (within the last five years).

Earlier this week, we welcomed The Secret Gem-- a pop-up vintage clothing shop to our store. We hope that this little shop will appeal to students at SUNY Cortland, TC3, Ithaca and Cornell-- as well as any local, fashion-forward, high school students who have jumped on the retro/vintage bandwagon. With jackets, shoes, boots, sweaters, flannels, jumpers and more priced between $12-$40, these hand-selected pieces are truly one of a kind and will hit a fashion home-run with cost-conscious shoppers.

For The Second Knob, welcoming an outside vendor is a new experience and one that we are fully embracing. Because the target market for retro/vintage fashion may not be the same market we target for primitive, country home decor, gifts and antiques, we hope this new pop-up shop will bring new customers to our store.

The Secret Gem is planning a "grand opening" event for later this year-- perhaps, with the kick-off of  The Second Knob Flea Market, which will open in May and run through October. The flea market will be held one weekend a month throughout summer/fall and will welcome vendors from across the state. *We are making a conscious effort not to have our market on the same weekends that Found in Ithaca holds theirs!

Vendor registration applications will be available beginning in mid-March. A 10x10 space will run $30 and a 10x20 space will run $40.

Also new this week....

Snow Tired...But Plowing Through on Thursday!

There is nothing more depressing than snowfall after snowfall after snowfall... Not true.
There are a lot of things far more depressing than snow but for our small business, a forecast of snow has meant that business is slow. January 2015 was the slowest month in our last five years of business--and the FIRST time in five years that we experienced NO sales for one entire day. Yes, it was a lousy, snowy, cold day outside and who can blame our customers for not venturing out?? We don't.

In the retail world, the months following Christmas are traditionally slow and we try to plan for this down-time.  This January, we focused on customer feedback which indicated a strong desire for us to return to a 6:00pm closing time (Hours are Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri & Sat 10-6 and Sun 10-5) and one late night a week (we are now open 10am-8pm on Thursdays). The bulk of our focus has been our website and exploring our online-sales options, finally selecting an e-commerce site and now working on building and populating the site. And, while our focus has been the new website, the incredibly slow sales in January did not escape our attention because, as anyone knows, bills continue to come in regardless of whether or not there is income. Unfortunately, in CNY, the cold winter months also means an increase in some bills (heating) and additional expenses (snow-plowing and salt). Argh! It's depressing!

I think I would feel much worse if we were alone in this predicament; but we aren't. I've spoken with other shop owners who have reported that they are experiencing the same--or worse. Sales reps have shared tales of woe from across the state and, in some cases, from across the nation.

So, I turn to blogging to release some of this slow-sales anxiety.

Our blog, like our website, has needed attention. It is one of those things that slipped to the wayside as we moved into our larger building and expanded our line of gifts. Blogging is a terrific way to share information with our customers and to attract new customers; it deserves more than neglect!!

The first week of February brought more snow and temperatures are dipping again but as we wind our way to Valentine's Day, we aren't going to let the snow and cold keep us down!

We are very excited to announce that The Second Knob will be home to a new "pop-up shop" very soon. Want more information? Stay tuned! #TheSecretGem

Here's Your Sign...

Here's your MY sign. I love signs! Can you tell? One stop at the shop and you will know this to be true. We have many SO MANY signs. I am often asked which one is my favorite; this is an impossible question to answer because I have a lot of favorites depending on what's happening in my life, my mood, the day of the week--- even the time of the day.
I am in a good business for a sign-lover. The signs in our shop are almost like my own private collection; chosen because they somehow "spoke" to me. When one of our big sign suppliers issues their catologue supplement (in June), it is like Christmas! The only disappointment is that the signs in the supplement aren't available until September---so, it really is like Christmas. I just received the supplement; as I turn the pages, I begin a roller coaster of emotions...Laughing out loud, tearing up and then smiling and giggling (yes, giggling).
I take great delight in ones that send a "good" message, that offer humor and inspiration. I am drawn to any sign that has some piece of advice I want to pass along to my daughters, my friends, my family. I love reading a sign and having an emotional reaction to it; when this happens, I know that I am looking at a good sign-- one that other people will likely appreciate as much as I do.
I am now taking pre-orders on some of the new signs - due out in September of 2012. If you see any you like, stop in and speak with me about pre-ordering a sign. Signs make wonderful gifts for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, thank you gifts, and all other occasions!

If you are ever in the shop and Andy tells you that the name of our shop has ANYTHING to do with Knob Creek Bourbon--DO NOT BELIEVE HIM.

The Second Knob was named after "The Nob;" a piece of property, which my grandparents purchased years and years and years ago. It is a place of solace and serenity. It is where some of my absolute favorite childhood memories were created.

I cannot help it; as we near summer, my mind drifts repeatedly to all that I love about the Nob.

I cannot wait to hear the song of the bullfrogs in the late evening and early morning; I cannot wait to sip coffee on the deck overlooking the bunkhouse and the hills of Brooktondale. I cannot wait to hear the kids whispering ghost stories and daring each other to run down to the bunkhouse and back once darkness has settled in.
